The Harriet Barber House Foundation received, in May 2008, an additional grant of $25,000 from the Richland County Conservation Commission to complete the exterior work. The grant will be used to provide funds for roofing, new siding, front porch repair, painting, and other structural work. The house will be used for community events and meetings more |
The Harriet Barber House
is significant for its association during the late 19th century with
the South Carolina Land Commission, a unique attempt by a southern
state to give freedmen the opportunity to own land. Samuel Barber, a former slave, purchased land in 1872 from the commission. In 1879 his wife Harriet, also a former slave, received title to the land. more |
